Can cold home kill fleas?

Yes, I've read other answers stating fleas can thrive in warm homes even though dying outside in winter. I live in the East coast which gets brutally cold. So, since fleas need a certain level of "comfort humidity", will they die if I leave all my windows open in the winter or fall. Again, I'm not talking "warm home" here. Its freezing cold inside if I leave the windows open and I will leave them open if it works. I'm asking regarding stages of flea life, especially the cocoon stage. I know they've thrived for millions of years, but, before resorting to chemical/ natural sprays, powders, etc... what do you think? Any vets here? Anyone try before.
