What is a natural repellent of ants that can be used around food and animals?

This seems to be a year of big black ants. Are everywhere.

I just bought some "organic" ant bait in my local nursery and seems to be doing the trick. The lady tells me it's made of crushed oyster shells they are dry. Comes in a white powder. If you want the actual name you have, you can send an email and I will go digging in the shed and find out. By the way .. I have a child of three years and 19 months of age found in everything that I had to buy something it was safe for them ... I am very protective and concerned about the chemicals to be near my children, but I researched this and there is nothing that can harm it.
